Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky
In 1920, the paths of two of the last century’s most iconic artists crossed. Coco Chanel, the famous designer, befriended the great Russian composer Igor Stravinsky and his family, offering the poverty-stricken musician refuge in her country mansion. Legend has it that Coco and Igor had an affair at this time, and director Jan Kounen has taken this premise and run with it. Kicking off where Anne Fontaine’s COCO BEFORE CHANEL left off, the film begins in Paris in 1913, when the women’s fashion iconoclast attends the landmark performance of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and is fascinated by the sensation it causes. Shortly after the war ends, the two meet again; Coco is now wealthy and successful while Igor is a destitute refugee living in exile. What follows their reunion could only occur at the intersection of art and culture and of style and genius, as the two revolutionary artists carry on a mad and passionate affair despite the love and loyalty Stravinsky feels for his wife and family. Stunning costumes, exquisite sets, immortal music, and fine performances make this sexually-charged period piece a deeply moving and sensual delight.
