Only Human
Florida Premiere!

“A spirited Spanish farce replete with gross misunderstandings, eccentric characters, unfortunate coincidences, and hastily constructed cover stories…delivers the laughs with regularity.”—The Guardian (UK)

Winner of two international comedy film festival awards, this hilarious cross-cultural love story confronts one of the world's most impossible conflicts head on and examines the issue with honesty, depth, and humor. Leni has come home to Madrid to introduce her fiancé Rafi to her idiosyncratic Jewish family for the first time. Everything goes smoothly until the lovers belatedly reveal that Rafi is Palestinian. Amid the ensuing hysteria, Rafi escapes to the kitchen to help out with dinner preparations, but he inadvertently causes an accident with some frozen soup that could prove even more disastrous than the evening's revelation. Husband-and-wife writer/director team De Pelegri and Harari have created a gloriously irreverent family comedy filled with sharp humor, surprising warmth, and a brave timeliness.

Spain/UK/Argentina/Portugal, 2004, 89 min, Not Rated, In Spanish w/ English subtitles, Directed by Teresa De Pelegri & Dominic Harari

USHPIZIN

Ushpizin

“This rich, sentimental drama is a sumptuous treat.”—Le Apprenti, Movie Vault

Winner of "Best Picture" at the 2004 Israeli Critics Awards, as well as "Best Actor" for writer-star Shuli Rand from the Israeli Film Academy, Ushpizin (roughly translated as "holy guests") reveals a world of wonder in the Jerusalem courtyards of pious ultra-Orthodox Jews. On the eve of the Jewish harvest festival of Succoth, Moshe, an impoverished and devoutly religious man struggling to make ends meet, and his wife, Mali, need a miracle. They pray fervently, and as unexpected events begin to occur, two escaped parolees from Moshe's wild, secular past appear. Believing they are being tested by the divine, the couple invite their guests to stay, with unpredictable results. As directed by Gidi Dar, this first collaborative effort between Israel's religious and secular communities features a first-class cast of many non-professionals and proves to be a thoroughly charming story of faith and love.

Israel, 2004, 90 min, Rated PG, In Hebrew w/ English subtitles, Directed by Gidi Dar

Go for Zucker!
Florida Premiere!

“The first German-Jewish comic film in decades…unashamedly politically incorrect!”—Daily Telegraph (UK)

Down on his luck, conniving pool shark and ex-journalist Jaeckie Zucker must make up with his estranged Orthodox Jewish brother, Samuel, in order to meet the terms of his mother's inheritance-the only thing that could save him from jail, ruin, and divorce. But as Samuel and his clan move into Jaeckie's chaotic household, a clash of civilizations is inevitable, and Jaeckie's going to need every trick he can think of to make things go smoothly. New game, new chances… Believed to be the first Jewish comedy produced in Germany since WWII, this hilarious work about two brothers raised on opposite sides of the Berlin Wall was a surprise critical and commercial hit in its native country, winning six 2005 Golden Lolas (German Oscars) including Best Picture, Director, Actor, and Screenplay, as well as the "Ernst Lubitsch Award" for Best German Comedy.

Germany, 2004, 95 min, Not Rated, In German w/ English subtitles, Directed by Dani Levy.

Protocols of Zion
Florida Premiere!

“Powerfully conveys the despicably fictitious ways in which scapegoats are manufactured, and the method by which irrational blame-games fuel mass intolerance.”—Nick Schager, Slant Magazine

Marc Levin, director of the 1998 Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner, Slam, now brings us an explosive look at resurgent anti-semitism in the wake of 9/11. The film draws its inspiration from an encounter he had in a NY taxi not long after 9/11, in which his driver, an Egyptian immigrant, made the startling claim that the Jews had been warned not to go to work at the World Trade Center on the day of the attack. He then said that "it's all written in the book," referring to The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a notorious forgery created over 100 years ago, purporting to be the Jews' master plan to rule the world. Long ago discredited as a fake, the book was a crucial influence on Hitler, and Levin uses its renewed popularity and sudden availability via such outlets as Amazon and Wal-Mart as his departure point. His personal odyssey into a world of religious intolerance and ethnic bigotry waged, ironically, in the name of God, makes for an extraordinary documentary.

USA, 2005, 93 min, Not Rated, Directed by Marc Levin
