Enzian Theater and Rollins College partner to launch Science on Screen Program with a special screening and discussion of EUROPA REPORT
Enzian Theater has been named as a recipient of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and The Coolidge Corner Theatre’s Science on Screen series.
Science on Screen pairs film screenings with lively discussions by science and technology experts. Each film serves as a jumping off point for the speaker to explore a related science or technology topic in a way that engages popular culture audiences.
As one of 20 independent theaters across the country to receive this grant, Enzian will present a series of films to take advantage of scientific resources in Central Florida.
The series kicks off with a special screening of EUROPA REPORT, preceded by a Discussion led by Lewis Duncan Ph.D., President of Rollins.
This series will have 2 additional screenings in 2014. Subsequent announcements to follow.
EUROPA REPORT | Saturday, November 16, 12:00 PM
USA, 2013, In English, 90 min, Rated PG-13, Directed by Sebastián Cordero
A sci-fi thriller presented with documentary-like attention to scientific accuracy, this film follows an exploratory space mission to Europa, a moon of Jupiter suspected of hosting a liquid ocean under a relatively thin layer of ice. In both challenge and sense of discovery, it imaginatively represents mankind’s next small step in our search for the existence of extraterrestrial life. As Sara Stewart wrote in the New York Post, “The real treat here is the science, not the fiction. The film’s sleek aesthetic was developed in consultation with NASA about what such a mission would actually require, and look like as viewed on surveillance cameras.”
Lewis Duncan Ph.D., President of Rollins College and an accomplished space physicist, will talk about the search for extraterrestrial life.
